DENVER CITY INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT
Denver City Independent School District is a mid-sized public school district in Yoakum County on the Texas South Plains. DCISD has an enrollment of 1,750 students. The district is comprised of 4 campuses: Denver City High School, a 2007 USDE Blue Ribbon School; Gravitt Junior High School; Kelley Elementary; Dodson Primary. In 2004, the combined campuses of Kelley & Dodson were selected as a USDE Blue Ribbon Campus. With the recent UIL realignment, DCHS, with 517 students, will compete in Conference 4A.
In the summer of 1940, the high school building was constructed and opened for the 1940-41 school year with 180 students. During that first year, four teachers taught at Sligo. After that, only two teachers remained, teaching six grades. This continued until 1956 when the building burned and the students were brought to Denver City. Mr. J.W. Jones served as the district's first Superintendent of Schools. He served in that capacity for 30 years until 1970. Since then, seven other men have followed his lead: Mr. B.F. Conger, Mr. Virgil Kelley, Mr. Joe Robinson, Mr. Howard Pollard, Dr. Steve Mills, Mr. Dagobert Azam, and Mr. Gary Davis,who became the Superintendent in the summer of 2014.
Denver City Independent School District, the official name acquired in September, 1959, has grown every year since 1941. The enrollment reached its highest point with 1,869 enrolled in DCISD in 1985.
DCISD students have earned accolades and honors in the many co-curricular and extra-curricular activities that it offers. They have competed well in many areas, including: band, athletics, academics, theatre, Skills USA, 4-H, FFA, and FCCLA, just to name a few. High school students are afforded the opportunity to take online dual-credit classes through South Plains College and the University o Texas-Permian Basin.
In 2016, DCISD honors the past and celebrates the future as it commemorates its 75th anniversary. The future looks extremely promising as the district has completed a $40 million bond project, which included construction of a new, state-of-the-art field house, an new industrial arts technology complex; a new multi-purpose athletic complex; renovations to the existing junior high band and athletic facilities; as well as reconfigured parking areas. That bond project also included a new maintenance and distribution facility for the district as well as new construction at the transportation department.
In 2013, the voters overwhelmingly approved another $72.5 million bond for the construction of a brand new, state-of-the-art high school campus. Construction is expected to be completed in late 2017. The high school will include a new preforming arts center for the music and theatre programs as well as a technology/media center, a cosmetology department and innovative classroom space to meet0 the needs of the 21st Century learners.
We are exited for the future and proud of our past. It seems only fitting to celebrate 75 years of quality education of the students of West Texas.
